“The problem is that I’m not equipped to do anything else,” Konrad said to Josef. “I’m a soldier. A trained sniper.”

“Like being a preacher without a pulpit,” Josef replied. “Or a pastor without a congregation.”

Konrad chuckled. “Looks like we’re a couple of Third Reich misfits.”

“Or first class citizens of a better kingdom.”

“You’re talking about heaven, right?”

“No, I’m talking about here and now.”

Konrad was puzzled. “Even so, this is a God conversation, right?”

Josef laughed. “If you’re wondering if I’ve established the kingdom of Ramah Cabin, the answer is no. As Christians we’re citizens of God’s kingdom even while we’re living on earth.”

“You think there’s a place in this kingdom for an unemployed sniper?”

Josef became suddenly weary. He let his head fall back against the chair. For a time he said nothing. He simply looked at Konrad, looked him in the eyes. Konrad had to admit that being held in someone’s gaze for that long was uncomfortable. He fought the urge to look away. If it was anyone else but Pastor Josef Schumacher staring at him, he would have.

It was strange, as if Josef had entered into him through the portals of his eyes and was now rummaging around in his soul’s cellar in search of something. Konrad let him rummage. Josef finally blinked.

“King David was a warrior king,” said Josef abruptly. “Before he was king, he was a shepherd.”

Konrad nodded. David and Goliath. The shepherd boy who bested the giant on the field of battle. It was his favorite Bible story.

“A shepherd who became a warrior,” Josef repeated.

Konrad nodded.

“Shepherd to warrior.”

Konrad nodded again.

“Shepherd. Warrior.”

“Right, a shepherd who became a warrior.” Konrad said this to indicate he understood.

“Shepherd . . . warrior.” Josef’s eyes had a faraway look in them.

Konrad sighed inwardly. It was the chemicals talking. Josef’s mind was failing him. They’d have to take up this conversation later.

“Shepherd . . . warrior.”

Konrad debated whether or not he should call for Mady or just get up and leave.

“Warrior . . . shepherd.”

Konrad looked down at his hands in a moment of decision. He started to get up.

“Sit down; we’re not finished.”

A command. Sharp. Direct. But not unkind.

“David was a shepherd who became a warrior,” Josef said.

“Yes, I understand that,” said Konrad.

“Do you understand? Then understand this you will be a warrior who becomes a shepherd.”
